Remote Control and Reduced Manning in Shipping Using 5G and ROC

Remote Operation Centres (ROCs) are a fundamental building block of remote operations in the Blue
Economy. ROCs have existed for a long time but an ongoing challenge is that ROCs are often constructed
using proprietary system platforms that are specific to manufacturers. This closed-door approach
prevents seamless remote operation across proprietary platforms and subsequently limits technological
innovation by reducing opportunities for collaboration.
