Gertjan Bouwers is committed to making the EU Digital Identity Wallet work in practice: trusted, privacy-friendly, interoperable across borders and genuinely useful in everyday life for citizens and businesses. His work links policy, technology and implementation.
Gertjan is a policy officer at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) and has worked on the eIDAS dossier since 2016. Since 2023 he has focused on the revised eIDAS Regulation. He represents the Netherlands in the European comitology committees and expert groups that negotiate the implementing acts for the EUDI Wallet, trust services and cross-border login means.
Earlier, Gertjan advised on the national implementation of the eIDAS Regulation (910/2014) and the connection of public services to the eIDAS network. He was project lead for the Once Only Technical System under the Single Digital Gateway Regulation, technical coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project DE4A, and represented the Netherlands in POTENTIAL, the large-scale pilot in which 20 Member States tested the EUDI Wallet.
In this panel, Gertjan brings a Member State perspective on turning common European rules into wallets that people trust, understand and can use across all Member States.
