Nicolai Balle is Director of Digital Faroe Islands (Talgildu Føroyar), leading the national digitalisation of the Faroe Islands. He has led the development of key national digital infrastructure, including the Faroese eID (Samleikin), the national citizen portal (Vangin), secure data exchange and digital wallet solutions from the beginning.
His work focuses on building simple, secure and user-centred digital public services and on demonstrating how a small society can use its size as an advantage to innovate and implement digital solutions quickly.
Nicolai has extensive experience in public-sector digitalisation and IT leadership, including previous role as Head of the Faroese Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. He holds a Master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School.
He is currently also engaged in shaping the Faroe Islands’ approach to AI and in strengthening international cooperation on digital identity, interoperability and digital public infrastructure.
