Peter is currently managing the European Commission’s 5G communication systems policy and the related research and innovation program. In 2021 he was designated Deputy Director for Future Networks, a portfolio that includes future connectivity, cloud and software, Internet policy and governance, and the Internet of Things.
Before he was appointed the EC’s Head of Unit in 2017, Peter managed the office of DG CONNECT, coordinating the Commission’s digital policy initiatives. Between 2010 and 2014, he was Head of Sector “Spectrum Policy”, a set EU law including the 2012 Roaming Regulation, and was responsible for implementing the EU telecom rules in Germany and Austria. Between 2005 and 2010, Peter coordinated the EU R&D program leading to the 4G mobile communications standards. Before joining the European Commission in 2004, he occupied several engineering and management positions in industry, academia, and start-ups.
Peter holds engineering and doctoral degrees from RWTH Aachen University, Germany.
